The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has now revived the Charitable Giving Tax Deduction policy. This State Charitable Deduction is a charitable contributions deduction that applies to all donations and includes all Massachusetts taxpayers, regardless of whether they itemize federally.
It applies to all donations from January 1, 2023 and on
The deduction was passed by voters in 2000, and coupled to a series of triggers associated with the state’s personal income tax
Charitable deduction was on brink of taking effect when that process concluded, but then delayed due to pandemic
The deduction is universal—it applies to all Massachusetts taxpayers, including those who don’t itemize their federal deductions, many of whom are with low or mid-level incomes
Expected to encourage individual giving, a key funding source for nonprofits
